April 22nd: The wonderful Spring weather has enabled us to get out on more walks than usual. Yesterday we did the circular walk from Hunters Inn along the coastal path, then back along country roads to Trentishoe. The route is supposed to be five miles, but we missed a turn and did an extra mile on the coastal path, which was lovely anyway! This was a very picturesque walk, but the initial climb above Heddons Mouth was tough going, and the path after that was more 'edgy' than usual in places! After turning inland the walk is downhill to Trentishoe and the church is worth visiting. The pedal organ was taken from the Mauretania, which was broken up in 1965.

April 14th: The walk to Hunters Inn from Lynton and back is about ten miles, but if you have already visited the Valley of Rocks on others walks, or if you fancy something a little bit shorter (about six miles) it is possible to park at the Woody Bay car park and walk from there. Although it is a linear walk there is a higher and a lower path, making the scenery different in each direction. We recommend taking the higher path at the top of the car park and before visiting Hunters Inn for refreshments detour slightly to the sea at Heddons Mouth (pictured below). On the way back take the lower route, passing the waterfall at Hollow Brook, which is one of the highest waterfalls in Britain, dropping 200 metres to the sea.

April 8th: For years guests have been telling us that one of their favourite walks is the walk to Culbone church from Porlock Weir. We finally got round to trying it today, and it is easy to understand why it is so popular. The path starts between the Anchor Hotel and the Ship Inn and soon gives panoramic views of Porlock Weir before rising steeply uphill through woodland to Culbone Church. The church dates from 1329 and is the smallest complete parish church in England. After a bit more uphill the route takes you back to Porlock Weir on downhill country lanes, also passing the pretty Parsonage Farm, where Coleridge was said to have been staying when he wrote the poem Kubla Khan. This particular version of the walk is about six miles, and much of it is shady and sheltered, making it suitable for particularly windy or sunny days. We have put copies of the walk in our new 'favourite walks' folder in the lounge.

April 5th: The paths around Foreland Point are well worth investigating, and yesterday we took advantage of the Easter sunshine to try a circular walk starting from Countisbury. There are a couple car parks which lead directly to Foreland if you fancy a quick look at the wonderful views towards Lynton and Lynmouth in one direction and Bossington in the other. It is possible to do this walk by following the Coastal Path from Lynton, but we were lazy and drove to the car park at Countisbury to try the circular walk described in many walking books which takes you over Countisbury and Foreland and back to the car park on inland paths. It is also possible to do a short diversion to the Lighthouse on a small access road.
