April 23rd: On a nice evening a great place to head for is the summit at Hollerday Hill. The path starts next to the Town Hall, then splits to a coastal path or a woodland walk, both of which lead to the summit. From the top the views of Foreland Point and the Valley of Rocks are wonderful. It's a great place for a picnic, or to watch the sunset.

April 19th: Thanks to Carin, our guest who stayed recently for sharing her excellent photos with us. It is always interesting to see the different ways people find to photograph the area. Some of Carin's pictures are dramatic shots of scenery, and some are imaginative close-ups which make interesting images and are still obviously of the local area.

April 17th: Well done to all our guests who took part in the Endurance Life race yesterday. The 10k, half marathon and marathon races which started at Hunter's Inn yesterday were the final leg in a series of challenging runs at various locations around the country. The Exmoor runs are said to be the toughest!

April 8th:
We finally got around to visiting Lundy Island yesterday. Every year several of our guests take the trip, and it is something we have looked forward to for some time. The MS Oldenburg leaves from Ilfracombe or Bideford about three times a week, and the two-hour crossing is all part of the fun, especially yesterday as the sea was so calm. We were also very lucky with the visibility, despite the forecast which said it would be foggy all day! Walking is really the only way to see the island, and we did a loop starting on the West side, crossing the island at the half-way wall and returning on the East side. Our visit left us wanting more as we did not get to the top half at all, or down to any of the coves. Lundy is known for it's variety of birdlife and the Pied Flycatcher in one of the pictures below was our most interesting spot as we had never seen one before. We want to show more information about Lundy so we have added a page on our own website here, and there is lots of information, including sailing times on the official website: www.lundyisland.co.uk |

April 6th: We tried a walk from the Exmoor magazine today, which was a loop around Porlock and Bossington. The walk is five miles so could be done in about three hours, but could easily take all day, especially if you were not familiar with the area. Starting at Porlock near the Miles Coffee shop (where we get our tea and coffee) the route takes you through country tracks to Bossington (first stop at the tea gardens), through Porlock Marshes (pictured), into Porlock Weir (refreshments again if required) and back through woodland tracks to Porlock town.

April 1st: Probably our favourite walk outside our immediate area is the loop that starts and finishes at Bossington NT car park. Bossington and Porlock are only a 30-minute drive from Lynton, so we think it is a good choice of walk when you fancy exploring slightly further afield. We enjoyed the walk again yesterday, although it was too misty to get any good pictures. The loop takes about three hours and has a bit of everything: coastal, moors and woodland. You even pass through the National Trust village of Selworthy (below), where we were pleased to see that the shop will be reopening this year. We have copies of this walk in the lounge and it is covered by one of our Croydecycle maps.
