February 14th:
The National Trust property at Watersmeet has reopened for the season. They are open all day during half-term, then weekends until March 13th when they will be open all day until the end of October. There were quite a few people making the most of the wonderful Valentine's Day weather today. We didn't want to, but we tried the fruit scones because it's our job to know what they are like . . . very nice as usual!

If you are making the walk to Watersmeet circular by returning over Myrtleberry Cleave, it is worth extending the route slightly by going via Hillsford Bridge. The path is very similar to the one between Lynmouth and Watersmeet, and the viewing point has been reopened which allows the best views of the spectacular waterfall pictured here. Even if you were planning to return to Lynmouth the waterfall is only a fifteen-minute diversion.
January 31st:
The Tarka Trail, which runs along the coast from Torrington to Bideford is excellent for cycling, but it doesn't lend itself very well to walking. We managed to do a circular walk today by starting at one of the car parks at Braunton Burrows then back towards Braunton itself. After a brief detour to the Tarka Inn near Chivenor we made a triangle back to the car park along country lanes. We would recommend the walk to anyone who likes coastal walking, there is plenty to see, and it is totally flat!
January 21st:
A new application for iphones has just been released that combines national park ordnance survey maps with the gps function of the iphone, turning your phone into a fully-functional gps device (Outdoors, £12.99). 1:50 scale maps for the national parks are downloaded to your device, as well as 1:250 for the whole of Great Britain, so no wireless network or phone signal is needed while walking. It is also possible to plan and save routes, tagging them with notes and pictures. Routes can be downloaded (or shared) at Everytrail.com. Now all we need is some slightly better weather to test it! The people at Outdoors suggest embedding the following video on your blog, so here it is:
January 7th:
Happy New Year everyone!
We are a bit snowed-in at the moment (for the second year running). Although no buses are coming into Lynton, delivery vans and 4x4s are able to get in and out of town, so we are not totally cut-off like last winter! Before the snow came, we started the New Year with an interesting walk, which would be even nicer in warmer weather! The seven and a half mile circular walk was all on paths which are new to us, rising high above Croyde Bay (pictured), then on to Braunton, with spectacular views over the beach and burrows, then back to Croyde via Puttsborough. As usual the details of the walk are in one of the books in the Lounge.
We have been sent a new North Devon events listing for 2010. We will list it on the attractions page soon, or download a Microsoft Word copy by clicking here.
January 10th:
Although we still have some light snow, there is not too much forecast for the next few days. The Valley of Rocks is not as snow-covered as it was last winter, and North Walk is patchy, being slightly sheltered from the main direction of the weather.
We did see a bird today which we have never seen before. It was thrush-like, although slightly smaller, quite red underneath, and with a cream 'eye band'. Having looked it up now, it was almost certainly a Redwing. Apparently they are not rare. Anyway, it was new to us! Sorry, this is the best picture we could get . . . although it was quite happy for us to be quite close, it just wouldn't stay still for a second!
