July 26th: The Exmoor Link 401 bus service starts again from tomorrow. It is a limited service that only runs on Wednesdays and Sundays from Bampton to Lynmouth and back twice daily. It stops at Dulverton, Tarr Steps, Winsford, Withypool, Exford, Simonsbath, Hillsford Bridge, Watersmeet and Lynmouth. This means it would be possible to visit Dulverton (leave Lynmouth 10.55 arrive Dulverton 12.30), have three hours in Dulverton then catch the 3.30 back to Lynmouth. Or you could get off at Withypool, Hillsford Bridge, or even Watersmeet and walk back! The service runs until 25th September.

July 18th: Pictures of the Valley of Rocks are always spectacular in one way or another. Seasonal changes, weather conditions and time of day all make such a dramatic difference. Thanks to our guests Jean and Dave for sending us this very atmospheric picture they took a couple of weeks ago. We have put a larger version on the local pictures page.

July 14th: Thanks to our guests John and Sandra who stayed with us recently for sending us their wonderful pictures of butterflies, sunsets and heather. The pictures below are a view from County Gate and a sunset at Wringcliff Bay in the Valley of Rocks. We have put larger versions on our local pictures page.

July 10th: Exmoor is on the television again this week. This Friday at 9pm BBC Four is showing a Julien Temple documentary about Dave Davies the legendary Kinks guitarist. In the programme he relives his tumultuous career while walking around the Exmoor scenery that has fascinated him so much since childhood that he decided to live here.

July 7th: We are experimenting with extending our blog to the world of Twitter. We will keep the blog in this format as usual but the panel at the bottom of the page will include a few extra (more conversational) bits about Lynton and Lynmouth, walks, birds, food, events, chickens etc. We have resisted the temptation to change the whole blog into Twitter format because not everybody uses Twitter and we cannot always be restricted to 140 characters. Also we like showing lots of pictures! It will be nice to be able to quickly mention things while we are out and about via our phones. Of course the best bit about Twitter is that it is interactive, so we would love any of our guests who use Twitter to follow us (click the button on the right) to reply to things or just say hello. Anyone who doesn't use Twitter will still be able to see what's going on in the panel below.

July 7th: Buffy had her first trip to the vet a couple of days ago. She had started to limp, and was not eating her food. She also laid a soft egg (not much of a shell) which apparently is not a good sign. She had antibiotics and a pain killer and she has been fine since. We are not supposed to eat her eggs for a month because of the antibiotics, which means we have to be vigilant about who lays what. That is easy with Willow, who has rather inconveniently made a nest in our pampas grass and prefers to lay there.g

July 5th: Some of our guests enjoyed a visit to Tintagel Castle today. Although it is a two hour journey along the coast into Cornwall, it is a nice drive passing by Hartland, Clovelly and Boscastle. The scenery around the castle area is stunning and is well worth the walk, which is quite steep in places. The town of Tintagel is heavily Arthur-themed and is a fun place to visit. There is a shop and a beach cafe near the castle and although we have not been ourselves for a while we do remember the bakers where you can watch pasty-making before you sample.

July 3rd: Our guests have been asking us if we have named the chickens and we have to admit that we have. We actually chose the names before we got them and fitted the birds to the names which are Buffy, Lulu, Penny and Willow. The video below is of Willow having a dustbath. It is a strange sight to see and when they get out they are spiky and covered with earth but after shaking themselves off for a while they soon get back to normal. There is a short video here:
