A new flyer came through our door today from a new company offering boat trips from Ilfracombe with an emphasis on wildlife. They go to Lynmouth, Clovelly and Lundy, where they drop anchor for a hamper lunch, then back along the coast from Morte Point. It sounds a nice way of looking at Lundy without actually landing and walking around it.
June 20th
We have mentioned about the Tarka Trail here before. Although it is ok for walking, most people cycle on it. We suggest starting at Fremington and going in either direction . . . Braunton one way, or Torrington (the Puffing Billy pub) the other. Yesterday our guest Alan did both bits, from Braunton to Torrington. The best thing about Torrington is that you can look forward to refreshments at the Puffing Billy . . . unfortunately it was shut yesterday!
June 17th
We are always impressed with the results from the Victorian Portrait Gallery in Lynmouth. There is a selection of Victorian style costumes (suits, top hats, feathers, etc) which you dress up in, and a sepia photograph is taken. You can buy it mounted, or you can choose from a range of Victorian-style frames. Our guests Tony and Betty had their portrait done yesterday and although we do not have a digital version to put here, it looked great. Another thing we must try ourselves sometime!
June 12th
Posters have been appearing locally for the Lightfest planned in Lynton and Lynmouth this September. We first heard about this at a meeting back in February, and now things seem to be getting going. The website is up-and-running which gives details of dates, events and how to get tickets. Previous similar events look spectacular.
The fifth Lynton & Lynmouth Music Festival was this weekend. The main stage was on the green in Lynmouth on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Various acts also played around the area all over the weekend in venues like Woody Bay Station, the Lynton Cinema and several local hotels and restaurants. The weather was excellent and the crowds seem to grow every year.
Sad news today. As mentioned here recently, Elwood has been very ill. He had been making a brave attempt at normality, but lately he stopped eating and drinking properly, and was getting really weak. There were no more medical options (he was 17), so we had to make the heart-breaking decision to say goodbye to him while he still had his dignity. We mention this here because since we have been at Southcliffe he has been a favourite with all the guests. He had a great character and was really friendly, often waiting on the first floor landing to get cuddles as people go to their rooms. People always ask after him and mention him in their Christmas cards. He even received presents from as far away as California and Rome. We will all miss him.
June 4th
We took a drive yesterday afternoon to a place we had noticed advertising cream teas. It was very nice, and in a lovely tea garden, just a 10-minute drive from Lynton. However, for us the standard has been set by our favourite, which is even closer. It is our duty to try them all . . . just in case!
