The annual Lynton & Lynmouth Music Festival was this weekend. Although we have not heard any official figures yet it seemed to be busier than ever. The main stage was on Lynmouth green on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Other venues included Woody Bay Station, Lynton Cinema, all of the pubs and also some hotels. The weather was kind as usual, especially on Saturday which was dry and sunny all day. Here's a few pictures to give you a feel for it all.
Yesterday Lynton and Lynmouth had a day of events commemorating 100 years since the death of George Newnes, the man responsible for building the cliff railway and the Lynton to Barnstaple Railway as well as donating the town hall, congregational church and cricket pavillion. Many people wore period costume to attend various historical sites. In the evening sideshows included the Lyn Line Dancers, the Vamanos Samba Band and fireworks at the harbour.
The evenings are so long now it is easily possible to be strolling around quite late in the evening. A nice idea instead of the popular North Walk is to take the similar but higher path that goes to the summit of Hollerday Hill. The path starts by the side of the Town Hall and is quite an easy climb, considering how high it takes you. There are plenty of benches at the top. What a great place to take a flask of coffee (or a bottle of wine) and watch the sunset.
We were pleased to get to see the gardens at Durcombe Water, Barbrook this weekend. The gardens open for a few days at this time of year for charity under the National Garden Scheme, but the last couple of years have been spoilt a bit by bad weather. Strolling along the marked route you keep finding interesting new themed gardens, which span two and a half acres . . . and still expanding.
