Thanks to Andrew for this picutre of Knightshayes Court, near Tiverton. Knightshayes is a National Trust property described as a Victorian country house with richly decorated interiors and garden with outstanding plant collection. Many people coming to Lynton by car come off of the M5 at exit 27 to use the A361 via Tiverton, so this is an interesting place to visit on the way, especially for members of the National Trust.
We are pleased to report that the Ladies of the Friends of Marwood are open again on Sundays and Bank Holidays for cream teas in the Church Hall near Marwood Hill Gardens. Marwood is between Barnstaple and Ilfracombe and Marwood Hill Gardens are described as twenty acres of gardens and lakes in a valley setting with a plant centre and tea room. The cream teas served in the Church Hall on Sundays are worth a visit on their own!
This is the new look to what was the George Newnes tea room, opposite the Town Hall. Now called the Oak Room tea house and bistro. We popped in to the opening the other night and the new owners Steve and Irene have been busy modernising the decor and the menus. During the day cream teas, sandwiches, etc. are still available, and they are also open in the evenings now as a bistro. We had to try lunch yesterday (research) and it was lovely!
The wet (and very windy) weather has stopped us and our guests from doing the favourite walks and visiting the usual attractions lately. However, our guests this weekend did manage to visit Watersmeet between showers, which has now reopened. Apparently most National Trust places are now open, including Arlington Court, which is another favourite, and very close to here.
While we were in Tiverton yesterday we had a quick look at the Grand Western Canal. Guests had told us about the Tiverton Canal Company, where it is possible to take a trip on a horse-drawn barge, or rent a boat. Boat trips were not available yesterday (the centre reopens at Easter), but it looks like an excellent way to see the beautiful countryside around Tiverton. There is plenty of information on their website about the barges and canals, and of course their floating shop and tea room!
