28th March: The Lynton & Lynmouth music festival line-up has been announced. This year's dates are the 12th, 13th and 14th of June, and is headlined by Badly Drawn Boy. Full details can be found on the Llama website at www.llama.org.uk. Talking about music, the blues/jazz/classical/flamenco/folk guitarist Claude Bourbon played at the Greenhouse last night. A virtuoso guitarist playing just down the road . . . can't be bad!

22nd March: Having realised Watersmeet is open, we tried a new walk to get there today. Rather than one of the usual routes, we tried something new. Along the river to Barbrook, then inland along country roads and bridleways before ending up at Combe Park (pictured), Hillsford Bridge then Watersmeet. Probably not as nice as the favourite (over the cleaves) route, but interesting to try a different route.

21st March: We realised today that according to the National Trust website, Watersmeet has reopened for the season. Previously they had said they would not be open until Easter, so probably the lovely weather has prompted the early opening. Good news for anyone coming before Easter. We will have to pop in and make sure the Cherry Pie is up to standard!

15th March: We were going to do a more adventurous walk today, but the weather was so nice we couldn't resist our favourite beach walk from Puttsborough (35 minutes drive from Lynton) to Woolacombe. We noticed today that there is another car park about half way along the beach which is even less crowded . . . perfect for a picnic/barbeque on the beach away from the crowds. We do have more interesting walks planned (honestly) to report on soon, but this walk (plus the Sunday lunch at Woolacombe) was too hard to resist today!

12th March: We are often asked if it is possible to hire bikes locally, and until now our nearest place has been Porlock, or Fremington (for the Tarka Trail). We now have Justrideexmoor, based in Lynmouth, where it is possible to hire bikes (and all the associated equipment) or book guided cycling tours of Exmoor. They even have GPS units with pre-loaded routes to suit your ability. We have flyers in the lounge, or see their website at: www.justrideexmoor.co.uk

11th March: Work has started on changes to our front car park. The large kerb and flower bed has been replaced with a much smaller flower bed and retaining kerb to make swinging into the parking spaces easier. It used to be a bit tricky!

9th March: Exeter is the capital city of Devon and is an interesting place for a day trip from here. The cathedral and historic quayside are both worth visiting and the newly redeveloped Princesshay area is great for shopping. A couple of days ago our guests Muriel and Derek enjoyed a trip there, and instead of driving (which is about an hour and forty minutes from here by car) they went by train on the picturesque Tarka line from Barnstaple, which takes just over an hour. Quite a good idea for a rainy day!

5th March: About this time last year Watersmeet was opening because of the early Easter. This year our guests making the most of the lovely Spring weather have had to be creative to find refreshments en route. We recommend extending the usual 'over the cleaves' walk to include the pubs at Brendon or Rockford. Otherwise just inland from Watersmeet is a path (quite steep) to Countisbury, where you can stop in to the Blue Ball Inn then back along the coastal path.
