Although we are closed now until February we will keep updating the blog whenever possible, particularly if something interesting happens locally, or if we do a new walk etc. that might be of interest to our guests. We tried a walk in the other direction from Puttsborough to Croyde this weekend, which is perfect if you fancy a coastal walk, but not too long! Heading left from the car park you soon join the coastal path with wonderful views back towards Woolacombe, then out to Baggy Point and Croyde. There is a quick way back on country lanes (half an hour) or you can stay on the coastal path, but cut the Baggy Point corner off to make the way back shorter. Very nice lunches available at The Thatch in Croyde!! The pictures show the path heading away from Puttsborough, Baggy Point, and the path looking towards Croyde.
We were able to take advantage of the unusually warm weather today by visiting our favourite beach at Puttsborough. The walk from Puttsborough to Woolacombe is the one we always recommend if guests fancy a stroll (or paddle) on a beach, and today we discovered an alternative walk back which gives beautiful views of the beach and Woolacombe itself. After walking to Woolacombe we were trying to walk back along the Coastal Path, and we found Woolacombe Warren, which is a grassy area running parallel to the beach. According to the information sign the dunes were used as a golf course before the war, then for invasion training during the war itself. By the 1970s a conservation initiative was necessary and the dunes were planted with marram grass which has been successful in providing the vegetation cover seen today.
