October 16th:
Thanks to Alan and Sheila who brought us this old Southcliffe (Hotel) brochure. We have seen old Lynton & Lynmouth holiday brochures before, but it is really interesting to see specific Southcliffe leaflets. Although there is no date on it, we think it is probably from the late 70s' or early 80's, before the current grading system (or en-suite bedrooms). Although the brochure style is a bit dated, the pen drawing on the cover is really nice.

Reviews October 13th:
A great idea for a day out not too far from here is Hartland. Close to Clovelly, it is about an hour's drive. We had visited Hartland Point and Quay before, but today we finally got round to doing the walk from Hartland Quay to Spekes Mill Mouth. The walk is a mile each way to the waterfall, and surprisingly not as hilly as it looks. The bay with the waterfall is a very picturesque spot, and is very popular with surfers . . . very entertaining to watch while you have your picnic!

We also visited Docton Mill, which is also nearby. We realised later that it is possible to plan a short circular walk to incorporate Hartland Quay, Spekes Mill Mouth and Docton Mill. Apart from the excellent tea room there are award winning gardens and a water mill to see. Yes, we did have to try another cream tea, but this time we had help finishing it!
October 9th:
We stopped into Chambercombe Manor, Ilfracombe yesterday . . . one of our favourite places for a cream tea, especially when the weather is nice. We heard about some interesting dates if you are planning a visit to the area . . . this month they are doing some evening tours of the house and grounds by candlelight on Thursdays the 15th and 22nd and all week from the 26th to the 30th. Tickets are £12 per person, which includes supper. The tours are always fun and must be spooky by candlelight.
October 5th:
Various food-related events are taking place at the moment as part of this year's Exmoor Food Festival. A full programme can be found on the Visit Exmoor website:

Sadly the Lyn Food Fest (last year's event pictured) will not be happening on the 10th October as planned because of work being done to the floor in the Town Hall. The event has been re-scheduled for the Spring.
October 3rd:
We visited the Tarka Inn today, which is near Braunton on the road from Barnstaple. Several guests have told us about it recently. The rear of the hotel/restaurant sits on the Tarka Trail, looking across the water towards Fremington. It is an ideal refreshment stop if you were cycling from the Barnstaple direction.
October 1st:
Congratulations to our guest Ruth who celebrated her birthday with us recently. Thanks to our other guests who helped us on the night with the singing which has never been our strong point!
