October 31st:
We have now closed for the winter. As usual the year seems to have flown and we are already starting to make plans for when we reopen in 2011. Although this is the time when we do most of our decorating and maintenance we also hope to do some new walks (and some old favourites) which we will mention here, along with plenty of photos if we think they would be of interest for future visits.

October 25th:
The car park at County Gate (on the border between Devon and Somerset) is a popular place to start a walk, either to the Doone Valley, back to Lynton and Lynmouth via Watersmeet or along the coastal path. We drove past today and noticed cafe signs. The building that used to be a visitor centre (about five years ago) has been turned into a very nice cafe with tables inside and out. This is really useful as it is really the only place to get refreshments before Porlock. Apparently it has been open since July!

October 21st:
The National Trust property at Watersmeet is still open until the end of the month when they will be closing for the winter until half term in February. We strolled along the river today for a visit and were lucky to get a close look at one of the grey herons that fish there. He/she was so focused on the water we managed to get quite close without disturbing him/her. Not so lucky with the Dippers. Although we saw lots, but they are really hard to get a good picture of.
October 18th:
If you fancy a flat walk for a change why not try the Tarka Trail, which runs from Braunton to Torrington. Although we usually recommend it for cycling, yesterday we tried walking from Barnstaple to the Tarka Inn, which is about four miles towards Braunton. The path, which is a disused railway line runs alongside the river Taw as it widens to the sea and is a great place for bird spotting.
October 8th:
For years we have planned to mount a webcam on the house looking out over the town towards Countisbury Hill. Today we finally got round to installing one. After a few technical hitches it is now sending pictures to the website every minute. Now if you fancy a little taste of Lynton (or if you just want to see what the weather is like) it will be possible to do so from the comfort of your own home. There is a link to the camera on our home page, or just click here
October 3rd:
The Exmoor Food Festival is taking place from the 2nd October until the 10th. Loads of food-related events are taking place all over the area: food walks, farmers markets, cooking demonstrations and courses, and of course tastings. The Lyn Food & Fete was today in marquees on the Manor Green in Lynmouth. There was so much excellent local food and drink on display . . . and now there is one less huge quadruple chocolate cake! If you are planning a stay during the next week all the events can be found at www.exmoorfoodfestival.co.uk
