September 21st: There was a record number of participants in this year's Doone Run which took place yesterday. September's wonderful weather continued, which must have helped boost entries. The 10-mile course goes from Lynmouth to Watersmeet, Hillsbord Bridge, Myrtleberry Cleave, Lynbridge, Southcliffe, Lee Abbey, the Valley of Rocks (North Walk) and back down to Lynmouth. The winning time was an amazing 1hr 9mins which works out at under seven minutes a mile!

September 11th: One of the most popular local walks is featured in this quarter's Exmoor magazine. The walk from Porlock Weir to Culbone Church is still on our 'must do' list, but we have several guests who love it so much they do it every time they visit Exmoor. The six mile walk takes in some of the coastal path as well as some steep woodland. Culbone church is the smallest complete church in England and dates from the late 12th century. The Exmoor magazine says refreshments are available at Porlock Weir, but the walk is also described in The Times Online which says there is a shed near the church with tea bags and an urn . . . now we have to do the walk to see if that's true! http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/travel/walks/article6108071.ece Thanks to Alan and Liz for the panoramic picture of Porlock Weir

September 2nd: Yesterday we did the walk to Foreland Point which we only discovered the other day. From the car park just past Countisbury Hill (marked Foreland Point) it is only about a 40-minute walk to the Lighthouse on a narrow tarmac road but the views towards Porlock are excellent. With the starting point being so high the walk back to the car park is fairly steep in places and does take a bit longer! We saw another (or the same) herd of deer near where we saw them the other day, plus several interesting birds including Goldfinches, Stonechats, a Wheatear (pictured) and our first Peregrine Falcon. We were too busy with the binoculars identifying the Falcon to take a picture as well!
