If you fancy visiting a beach while you are visiting North Devon, Putsborough is well worth investigating. Situated at one end of the Woolacombe bay, Putsborough is always less crowded than most of the other beaches. It is possible to walk to Croyde via Baggy Point or just along the beach to Woolacombe (as we did today). In the left picture below you can see Woolacombe in the distance. It takes about 40 minutes to get there.

This year's Doone Run took place yesterday. About 180 runners completed the course, which was unusually slippery in places due to the amount of rain we have had recently. The winning time for the 10-mile hilly run was an amazing 1.09, which is less than 7 minutes per mile! The run starts at Lynmouth then goes to Watersmeet, Hillsford Bridge, over Myrtleberry Cleeve and down to the Bridge Inn, through Lynton and over Southcliffe to Lee Abbey before heading back to Lynmouth via North Walk. Very picturesque, although most of the runners probably were not appreciating about the views!
September 22nd:
It is good to have a few wet weather ideas up your sleeve, and this month places like Arlington Court and Dunster Castle have been especially popular! We recently heard of a new idea when our guests Ruth and Michael (who sent us the pictures below) visited a place called Dingles near Okehampton. Dingles is a Fairground Heritage Museum which is home to the National Fairground Collection, a 45,000 sq ft indoor attraction capturing the magic of a bygone age with exhibits, vintage engineering and stunning artwork displays. Lots of information about what can be seen, opening times and prices at Dingles website here: http://www.fairground-heritage.org.uk/

We have watched the Middleham Memorial Gardens in Lynmouth develop over the years (while having cream teas on the other side of the river) but have never visited. Created as a memorial to the hamlet that was destroyed by the 1952 flood, the gardens are just along the right bank as you head inland towards Watersmeet. We were inspired to visit today when our guests Frank and Rosalind showed us a picture of the tree in the gardens that has grown around an old bed. Presumably the bed was tangled in the tree during the flood and the tree grew around the bed over the years until it was uncovered, although nothing about it is mentioned on the information boards in the garden.

Our guests John and Jackie sent us this picture today of themselves at Lands End. They stayed with us recently on their way from John O'Groats to Lands End. Their holiday was spent cycling the 1000 mile route on a tandem to raise money for Help For Heroes. They told us money is still coming in and totals about £1800 so far! WELL DONE!

September 1st:
Thanks to Bryce, our guest who stayed recently for sending us his amazing panoramic picture of the Valley of Rocks. Photographs of the Valley of Rocks are always interesting because of the different weather conditions and seasonal colours, but panoramic pictures are also able to capture the scale of the area. The shape of the picture doesn't fit on our picture gallery page, but we will find somewhere to put a larger version because there is more detail in the picture than can be seen below. We must also get a tripod and do some experimenting ourselves!
