Lynton and Lynmouth were featured recently on the BBC4 programme Britain by Bike, where Clare Balding is following rides featured in books by cycllist and author Harold Briercliffe. The route starts at Lynmouth showing the Glen Lyn Gorge, the cliff railway, Lynton via Northwalk and the Valley of Rocks, Hunters Inn, the tin mine at Combe Martin and finishing at Ilfracombe. If you missed the programme it is still available on the BBC iplayer.

If you are in the Ilfracombe area it is well worth stopping in to Chambercombe Manor. We happened to be passing by today so we tested the cream teas (again) in the name of research, and of course they are lovely as ever! Tours are available of the interesting manor house which dates from the 11th century, and is said to be haunted. It is also possible to browse the grounds and visit the tearoom. Ghosts, gardens and cream teas!

July 11th:
We have been meaning to try the walk from Parracombe to Hunters Inn for some time, and finally got around to doing it today. The coastal path from Hunters Inn to Lynton is an excellent walk, but rather than walk there and back a good way is to get the bus to Parracombe and walk to Hunters Inn and then Lynton, a total of about eight miles. The well-marked path starts with about half an hour through fields, then a pretty riverside woodland walk gets you to Hunters Inn. The current owners have brought the peacocks back to the grounds. At the moment the peahen has chicks, which are being raised in a safe place, which we were shown. We were wondering what peacock chicks looked like (pictured below).

A couple of new places have opened in Lynton recently on the steps leading down to Queen Street. There is a smart new gallery called Gallery@500ft which has a great selection of paintings, prints, sculptures and ceramics . . . well worth a look if you have a space to fill at home. Also below it is the Butter Churn restaurant serving reasonably priced home made food in the premises that people will remember as the Mad Hatter, Ex-Mex and more recently On The Steps.

July 1st:
Wistlandpound Reservoir is only a 20 minute drive from Lynton, and is an excellent place for a stroll or picnic. The reservoir is surrounded by a 2.5km trail that is mainly level and is designed to be accessible to all users. We completed the loop easily in under an hour. There are lots of picnic tables placed at good viewing areas and a bird hide for watching the many seasonal birds that visit the area.
