Many of our guests mention that they keep an eye on our website, so we thought we'd put a few bits of news here that might be of interest, or don't belong anywhere else on the website . . . new walks we hear about, interesting places to visit, etc. We'll try to keep it updated regularly. Sorry if we ramble on a bit!

Our last guests of 2007 left this morning, and we have now closed for the winter. We will be reopening mid-February as usual, so we have a few months to have a break and also do some decorating and maintenance that is easier to do when we are closed. We hope to do all the walks that we have heard about during the season, and hopefully some new ones, which we will mention here as usual and write out for everyone else to try next year!

Last night the Ministry of Entertainment presented Doodlebugs & Bogeymen, performed by Kate McNab and Ross Harvey in the Town Hall, Lynton. The event was sponsored by the Lyn Valley Society which raises funds for the restoration of the Town Hall. It was a very professional show and we thoroughly enjoyed watching it. The show is about two children evacuated to the West Country during World War 2 taken from true stories and songs from the era.

Guests often ask us where they can see Exmoor ponies. There are some roads we recommend, where we sometimes see the ponies, but of course it is not guaranteed. Our guests Alan and Liz, who stayed recently visited the Exmoor Pony Centre near Dulverton. You can book a ride on Winsford Hill (advanced riders in the morning, less experienced riders in the afternoon), or you can have a taster session to learn about the handling and grooming of ponies and have a ride in a controlled environment. It is also possible to just visit the farm to see the ponies without riding. Alan and Liz left us some flyers for reception and there is more information on their website at: http://www.exmoorponycentre.org.uk

Yesterday Sue made a batch of whisky marmalade for the first time, which we tested this morning. Although the whisky taste isn't strong, it isn't too subtle either! We think it will be popular at breakfast and Sue has also made extra in case anyone wants to take some home. She is experimenting with chutneys at the moment, which we hope will be available next season.

Last weekend our guests Jenny and Graham told us they had seen a wheatear in the Valley of Rocks. Yesterday we saw a bird we had never seen before near Six Acre Farm (about two miles from the Valley of Rocks). When we got back and looked it up we realised it was a wheatear. This is either an amazing coincidence that we should happen to see our first wheatear just after someone had mentioned it, or it is a really good time to spot wheatears. Apparently they like rocky coastal ground, which we do have plenty of. Sadly this is not our picture . . . we didn't have a camera with us!

The Exmoor Food Festival started this weekend. Various food-related events are planned for two weeks in locations all over Exmoor. The pictures below are from the Lyn FoodFest at the Town Hall in Lynton today. Of course we tried a few things (cream teas, apple port, chilli chocolate, etc.) All the events can be seen at the official website here: www.exmoorfoodfestival.co.uk

The Steam Gala at Woody Bay Station was this Saturday and Sunday and was extremely well attended. There were several guest locomotives, steam road vehicles, steam train rides, local traders stalls and of course a beer tent. There was also a visit by Exmoor Border Morris (pictured). Thanks to Trevor for the pictures.
